I am teaching Bucky LEFT and RIGHT. He is doing great.
Last week we went into Target to practice - LEFT, RIGHT and STAY. I have to admit, I was so proud of him - he did fantastic! He watched me and turned when he was supposed to and in the direction he was supposed to. When I told him to STAY, he did!
The problem is ME! I get LEFT and RIGHT confused - I always have had troubles keeping them straight (pun intended.)
I have to either look at my hands, or the steering wheel, to know which is which. Doesn't work so well when I'm walking the dog and can't check my hands, or, don't have a steering wheel in front of me. So I have to work extra hard to not panic and make sure I have the direction correct before I give the command.
I'm hoping once Bucky gets LEFT and RIGHT down pat I can rely on HIM to teach ME which direction to turn when I give the command.
Last weekend we did a Group Outing with the other Guide Dog Puppies and went to Froberg Farms. Its a Farmer's Market - with pies, sausages and BBQ - very tempting smells for us. I can't imagine how good it smells to the dogs.
Bucky is the only full golden in our group. The others are either labs or lab and golden mix. So Bucky, with his long dark blonde/red fur and extra handsome good looks, stands out from the crowd.
Winston, the dog on the left, is starting to train with the leather harness.
Winston goes IFT (In For Training - which is back to the campus in Florida to go to College) the begining of January so he is getting used to the harness now.
Bucky is doing so well learning his lessons (for the most part... he's not perfect - he's only 5 months old and has only been training for 6 weeks), it is now time for us to turn a page, start the next chapter and learn some new commands. YIKES!
BTW - we will definitely not be doing any shopping on Black Friday!
